Changing of the Guard

0

Once the Legion regrouped if you will, Paul Levitz had decided that it was time to shake up the group’s membership some, and that meant the exit of a few key Legion players.

The three founders of the Legion, Saturn Girl, Lightning Lad, and Cosmic Boy cast their vote for Legion leader, and then resign from the Legion to discuss with Element Lad (who is reelected as Legion Leader with Brainiac 5 as his new Deputy Leader) what their new roles will be in the group.  Coinciding with this event is the fact that the case that brought together these three teens officially comes to a close as the would be assassins of R.J. Brande were due to be released from prison at the same time.

Cementing their new role as “Legion Advisors” the three remain on call when needed, but the vacuum left behind, must be filled and so Element Lad asks Wildfire to organize a mass tryout for Legion membership.

Meanwhile, we find out about Comet Queen who is a student at the Legion Academy.  Turns out she has the hots for Bouncing Boy and wanted to be a Legionnaire so badly she had heard about Star Boy’s origin (flying through a comet), well Comet Queen or Grava of the Extal Colony, decides to jump right into the tail of a comet and it changes her forever into a quirky heroine with orange skin, fantastic agility as a flier, and a laser like plume of hair that leaves a trail behind her.  Bouncing Boy manages to convince her to come to the Legion Academy (it wasn’t difficult).

The Legion then finds itself up against some organleggers (again?  wow!) and this time the ring leader is a Bgtzlian who appears to be Phantom Lad, a man who challenged Phantom Girl for her spot in the Legion a long time ago.  As the Organleggers manage to elude the Legion including Dawnstar’s tracking powers, Brainy deduces what is going on with these pirates and enlists Phantom Girl to board the ship and stop it, which she manages rather easily.  Once again showing us it isn’t all about the powers you have, but about how you use them and that goes for brains and intangibility, powers that aren’t as showy as lightning or fire.

Timber Wolf gets to shine as he travels to the insanely barbaric world of Lythyl to fulfill Karate Kid’s will by planting a seed on the toughest rocks on Lythyl.   Wolf and the Kid’s mentor the Sensei come to Lythyl and are instantly thrown into this society of the weak are ruled by the strong.  As Timber Wolf and Sensei fight their way up the chain of command to the top dogs, the Three Judges of Lythyl:  Gorax, Steggus, and Myg and it is Myg that decides to take the two newcomers and test their skills to be on Lythyl.

Timber Wolf and Sensei sense an opportunity here and they knock Myg unconscious and decide to take him off Lythyl to see if they can redeem him from this barbaric world since he is so young.  As Wolf completes the mission, the Legion has gotten word of his secret mission and while Timber Wolf could not ask for help from anyone except Sensei to complete the mission, he can get help in the form of a rescue executed by Mon-El, White Witch, and Invisible Kid.

With the Legion of Super-Heroes vs. Legion of Super-Villains war finally wrapped up, its time for the try outs for new members.

The Top Row:  The Skreasks, Dev-Em, Sensor Girl, & Comet Queen

The Middle Row:  Tiger Girl, Mentalla, Energy Boy, Quislet’s Ship & Quislet Construct

The Bottom Row:  Tellus, Polar Boy, Magnetic Kid, & Power Boy.

Five new members? Wow!  That’s a lot of new blood for the Legion, so lets look at this logically.  Recent gaps in the membership include an energy wielder, a telepath, a magnetic, an illusionist, and a martial artist:  (Lightning Lad, Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy, Projectra, and Karate Kid).

We know from what has already occurred that Lightning Lass has taken her brother’s place, so ignore the energy wielder as a position needing to be filled.

It should go without saying that Magnetic Kid, who is Pol Krinn, Cosmic Boy’s little brother will be taking Cosmic Boy’s position in the Legion.

That leaves four more positions to replace.. okay.. well with a telepath gone, Saturn Girl’s abilities were invaluable in many cases to the Legion, so replacing her comes down to two potential candidates.  Tellus, a Hykraian who has telepathic and telekinetic powers, but is a fish like being and breathes a methane like atmosphere and Mentalla, a telepath from Titan, who is able to mentally control other individuals.  The Legion chooses Tellus who has undergone Legion Academy training, while Mentalla is fresh from Titan with no real Legion training to her credit.

So two positions filled and one more reject is added to the pile, and this one will come back in a few.

When Energy Boy begins his tryout, he is interrupted by Polar Boy of the now former Legion of Substitute Heroes, he requests that he be allowed to compete for Legion membership as his control over his ice powers have increased greatly over the years.

Polar Boy makes the cut.  Energy Boy does not.

Power Boy is also rejected for not having too much of a distinctive power.

We do not even see the Skreaks or Tiger Girl audition, add them to the reject list.

So that leaves two positions left and we have Comet Queen who joined Brainiac Five, Magnetic Kid, Tellus, and Mon-El on a training mission only to discover Dev-Em attempting to stop an Ontiir clone from sinking the coastline.  Ontirr takes the Legion applicants out and it is through the appearance of a strange ship holding a creature known as Quislet.

Ontiir vs. Quislet

Quislet pops out of the ship and pops into Ontiir’s laser chair and animates the chair and uses it to take out Ontiir.  Right after, the chair disintegrates and Quislet is then forced back into his ship.

The Legion is summarily impressed and admits Quislet, but rejects Comet Queen and Dev-Em rejects the Legion to stay in the Interstellar Spy Corps.

That leaves Sensor Girl.

Who is Sensor Girl and what are her powers will be a mystery solved later, but lets leave it at this.. Saturn Girl personally urges the Legionnaires to admit her stating “trust me Legionnaires, Sensor Girl has the best of reasons to join the Legion.”

Magnetic Kid, Tellus, Quislet, Polar Boy, and Sensor Girl all inducted into the Legion of Super-Heroes

And that is all for the Legion for a little bit folks.  We have one stop to make back in Titansland and then we move on to one of the most major series of stories in the DC Universe ever written.

Next Up:  Titans Time!  Lilith!  Azrael!  Kole!

Three Tales of the Legion…

0

While the Legion was dealing with the Legion of Super-Villains, other events were going on in their Tales book, which if you will remember was going on at the same time.

Tales was a great place to focus on those characters that did not get a lot of attention in the main fight of the LSH vs. LSV so here we have a little tale that hangs on Cosmic Boy with the Substitute Heroes.  Cosmic Boy is attempting to wrap up the Firebomber incident that killed his mom and while they find their man, the villain is a wiley one and he manages to trap them off in space leaving it up to Legion Academy students to save them.  See?  Even a veteran Legionnaire like Cosmic Boy can run into trouble and need a little help from his friends.

Meanwhile the mystery of the two Invisible Kids comes to the fore front.  At the end of the Prophet and Omen story, a being claiming to be Lyle Norg appears out of a space warp and now Jacques Foccart decides it is time for them to explore how Lyle came back from the dead.  Of course, it is a trap.  Lyle is not Lyle at all, but rather the Dream Demon that had trapped Wildfire before and to make matters worse as Jacques tries to leave the dimension, he summons Wildfire to him in the Dream Dimension to fight off the Dream Demon.

Wildfire and Invisible Kid come out of it okay however and all is well with the Dream Demon hopefully put down for good.  As Mon-El and Shadow Lass are finishing up cleaning up the LSV stragglers in our dimension, a strange summons comes through and it appears that Shady’s cousin, Grev, Shadow Kid, is getting married to the leader of the rival tribe of mountain barbarians named Lady Memory.

Of course, he is not doing this without a little bit of duress, as you can see.  Shady and Mon-El should be able to handle this right?  Wrong.  Lady Memory’s powers include being able to take all those memories of ones past and flood your brain with it, with Mon-El, that is 1,000 years of trapped in the Phantom Zone memories so Mon-El goes loco.

Mon-El gets a little help from some friends to get back under control and when Lady Memory attempts to take out Shadow Lass using the same trick, Shady clocks her one in the head.  Memories after all, are only memories.

Next Up:  The Magpie Strikes the LSH HQ, Brainiac 5 and Dawnstar go searching for the missing Legionnaires, and the Legion vs. the Dark Circle.

Shrinking Violets and Star Boys

1

The Legion is debating adding some new members to their ranks with the departure of Projectra and Karate Kid and where else to look but to the Legion Academy, the training ground of many of the members of the Legion.

At this writing the Legion Academy’s student body consists of Shadow Kid, Power Boy, Crystal Kid, Nightwind, Lamprey, Laurel Kent, Comet Queen, Urk, and Magnetic Kid.     Since both Shadow Kid and Magnetic Kid duplicate current Legionnaires powers (Shadow Lass and Cosmic Boy) both are ineligible for promotion, the others however are eager for the chance to move up to the big leagues.

Joining the Academy,   Invisible Kid II and White Witch appear for a few lessons in how to be a Legionnaire since they were both elected to membership on the fly.   Bouncing Boy and Duo Damsel stress the need for teamwork which is key in an organization like the Legion.   Acknowledging their powers are not the strongest, but they are each pieces of the whole and everyone’s powers, when used properly can be an asset to the Legion.   The students soon get a test as a few animals break out of the Metropolis Zoo.   The students manage to subdue the creatures, but the egos tend to get in the way of good clean teamwork.

The lady academy members seem to be especially cliquish here on whether or not Wildfire is a great Legionnaire or a bag of hot air.   Lamprey and Nightwind worship Wildfire as he told his origin story to them and they know what he has been through, the more brash Laurel Kent and newbie Comet Queen however view him as arrogant and a pain in the ass.   It is up to the White Witch and Invisible Kid to teach the students a lesson in humility as White Witch shows each of the students a sad scene outside.     Dawnstar is leaving the Legion to go on her Great Tour of the Galaxy as is her people’s custom.   At the end of this Grand Tour, she will find her mate.   Wildfire begs her not to go, but as Dawnstar cannot see a future with Wildfire due to the inability to be close physically, she leaves.     Wildfire purposely explodes his suit in frustration.

The active members meet to confer regarding promoting any of the Academy Members, based on the data they have at their fingertips, it is decided that none of the Legion Academy members are ready for the duty of being a Legionnaire.   As we see statues of the previously fallen Legionnaires, Star Boy makes a poignant observation.

“Better no new Legionnaire.. than another dead one.”   – Star Boy

In the next issue we discover where Chameleon Boy, Element Lad, and Brainiac Five have gone as they managed to get Colossal Boy and Shrinking Violet on a cruiser due to Imsk needing Violet right away.

As you can tell, this does not go well for Shrinking Violet at all…   lets peek in and see what happened, shall we?

In orbit above Imsk, Shrinking Violet’s home planet, the Legion try to confine Colossal Boy and then spray “Violet” with a gas called Cancellite, created by Supergirl.   Cancellite cancels the powers of Durlans temporarily.   After being sprayed, the real Violet would be able to demonstrate her ability to grow or shrink…   “Violet” is unable to do so…

Talk about your interracial marriages eh?   You did get that while in the Himalayas Colossal Boy and “Violet” secretly married, right?   Well, they did.   Colossal Boy, the good Jewish boy of the Legion is now married to a Durlan who betrayed one of his teammates, but unintentionally.

Yera is a Durlan actress and was tired of being accused that her only talent was her shape changing.   She longed to prove herself as a true actress and when the Imskian Underground contacted her she jumped at the chance to assume the role, having been told that Shrinking Violet was on vacation.     Yera vowed not to betray the Legion or their secrets, but swore than she would become Shrinking Violet even amongst those who know her best.

When Shrinking Violet returns to Imsk, the Underground finds her and they kidnap her back to their headquarters.

The real Violet, missing since she got back from the Nullport mission, had been trapped in a Sens-Tank all this time, her knowledge of UP military and Legion secrets being sapped from her over a period of months.

You could almost argue this was a fate worse than death.

The Legion does not take this well to say the least, and Chameleon Boy then reveals that he was the Yera that the Underground captured.   The rebels laugh him off saying that the cell he is in is impervious to Durlans escaping…well remember this folks, not all Durlans are created the same.

Cham easily breaks the bag and thanks to the radioactive material that Brainy sprayed Cham with the other Legionnaires were able to burst in and demolish the rebels and rescue Shrinking Violet.     While the real Violet is taken into Dr. Gym’ll’s care, Colossal Boy is left to deal with his wife.   After Yera says that she understands if Colossal Boy wants to divorce her, he says no, he fell in love with Yera and they are married.   Then the horrible thought hits him.. .what does he tell his mom?

We get a revisit of Star Boy’s origin as he and Wildfire discuss the results of the Legion election.   Star Boy hoping that Dream Girl is not elected leader again as he has missed having Nura to himself again, Wildfire dashes that saying that Dreamy has done a great job as leader and as the Legionnaires watch the votes come in in a neck to neck race to the end.

Star Boy constantly laments that he is the unluckiest Legionnaire, being the 13th member inducted to the Legion, having had his original Superboy level powers taken away to just the ability to make things super-heavy, being expelled from the Legion for killing an ex-boyfriend of Dream Girl, Kenz Nuhor, being forced to join the Substitute Heroes, having to rejoin the Legion under false pretenses as Sir Prize, and now being relegated to a fourth banana Deputy Leader under Dream Girl as the first two Legionnaires declined the job.

Wildfire counters that his life sucks even more as his life long love Dawnstar has recently flown out of his life, perhaps forever.

As the two pessimists commiserate, the Legion election results roll in.

Element Lad is voted in as Leader, finally as a write-in vote due to his work in finding and rescuing Shrinking Violet, Dream Girl is his deputy leader.

Next Up:   Omen and Prophet!   Honeymoons!   Family Dinners! and a Resurrection!   More Legion up next!

Day After Doomsday

0

Once the Legion managed to force the dread lord Darkseid, it was time for the story to take a beat and for most of the Legionnaires to take a little rest and relaxation.

The first story concerns the imminent break up of Light Lass and Timber Wolf, in which Legionnaire Blok insists that Timber Wolf sit with him and watch an old hologram tape of the Legion’s first encounter with the Green Lantern Corps.

In this story, “The Origin of the Universe” file we discover a little precursor of a big story to be happening later in the DCU.   We visit the early Legion with Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl, Lightning Lad, Triplicate Girl, and Colossal Boy as tehy come upon the Time Institute which is on fire.

Circadia Senius, the chief scientist at the Time Institute explains it all,

“Our time viewer was ready for the ULTIMATE K-K-KLIK— TEST… TURNED TO K-K-CALL up the BEGINNING OF THE UNIVERSE ITSELF.   We saw it– a massive hand, K-K-CRADLING our galaxy– And so we went back FURTHER— and K-K-KLIK, then it HAPPENED.   A BOLT–K-K-KLIK LIKE LIGHTNING FROM NOWHERE– SHATTERING OUR WORK!   K-K-KLIK—AS THOUGH WE WERE NOT PERMITTED TO SEE MORE!”

And that, Ladies and Gentlemen is the origin of the DCUniverse in just a nutshell, and we will be coming back to this moment again and again.   Here it is, so innocuous, and in a flashback story.

As the Legion helps Circadia Senius repair the damage and they prepare the experiment again they are interrupted by the Guardians of the Universe as they take the Time Institute off planet through the power of three Green Lanterns.   The Legion remarks that they have not seen a Green Lantern on Earth in years.   The Green Lanterns confirm that it has been centuries (so at least 2785) that a GL has been on Earth.

Of special note is one of the Green Lanterns is named Vidar.   Those of you following the Legion posts know that there is an Honorary Legoinnaire named Rond Vidar, whose father is the Legion villain Universo.   Yes, this Green Lantern is that very same Universo, just earlier in his career.

As the more headstrong Legionnaires fight the Green Lanterns, Saturn Girl contacts the Guardians telepathically for an audience.   The Guardians explain the reason for their interference.

One of their number, Krona, had violated the one taboo, looking back at the beginning of time… this unleashed a great evil upon a once peaceful universe.   This is what created the Guardians of the Universe, taking responsibility for one of their number’s transgressions, they built the Green Lantern Corps, and vowed to prevent anyone from discovering the secrets of the universe.

The Guardians return the Time Institute, with the promise that the United Planets never again try to discover the origins of the universe and the Green Lanterns will leave the United Planets alone.   Except the Legion comes across Vidar discovering the secrets of the Universe, which of course, they stop.   Vidar becomes a disgraced Lantern.   All is right with the Universe, for now.

During the flashback there have been vignettes between Timber Wolf, Light Lass, and Blok.   Mostly, these set up the eventually stage for Timber Wolf saying to Light Lass that the Legion is his home and he doesn’t want to leave.   Light Lass says she does want to leave, and she does so.   Alone.

In the next issue, What Do You Do On The Day After Doomsday, is a “lets catch up with our heroes some”

  • Page 1 & 2 – Mon-El and Shadow Lass continue their interrupted vacation time.   Mon-El appears to have recovered from his Great Darkness injuries and is taking Shady to a secluded section of the Universe called Asteroid Archipelago.
  • Page 3 – Blok is showing White Witch around the headquarters.
  • Page 4 – A party scene where we see Element Lad, Star Boy, Ultra Boy, Phantom Girl, Sun Boy, Saturn Girl, Lightning Lad, Light Lass, Shrinking Violet, and Colossal Boy who are joined by Blok and the White Witch.     Lightning Lad has fully recovered from that strange electric fever, Sun Boy informs Phantom Girl of his hobby (women), to which Phantom Girl dumps her glass on top of his head.   Dream Girl interrupts the festivities with an emergency call.
  • Page 5 – 7 – The Legion is called to the site of a mini nuclear bomb, a firebombing, that has occurred.   While they Legion tries to help, the massive casualty count of the people affects Phantom Girl.   Then someone says “D…Dirk?”   Sun Boy recognizes the burnt boy, as Pol, Cosmic Boy’s little brother who will soon become Magnetic Kid.
  • Page 8 – Light Lass and Saturn Girl have a parting of the ways, clearing up the air about the asteroid incident.
  • Page 9 – As Light Lass departs, Timber Wolf enters.   His personality has become gruffer since the break up.   Colossal Boy and Shrinking Violet’s romance heats up as Duplicate Boy of the Heroes of Lallor watches from afar via Superboy’s telescopic vision.

  • Page 15 – Wildfire, Dawnstar, Blok, Invisible Kid II, and White Witch are the newest Legionnaires and are going on a mission to the Asteroid Archipelago (see Page 1-2)
  • Page 16 – 17 – The Legion’s investigation of the firebomber’s continues.
  • Page 18 – Chameleon Boy is released from Takron-Galtos for helping contain the madness on the prison planet during the Great Darkness Saga.   However, he finds his powers no longer working.
  • Page 19 – 21 – The Legion round up the last of the Firebombers.
  • Page 22 – Cosmic Boy and Night Girl are returning from helping the people of Daxam re-terraform their planet after Darkseid made them all remake it in his image.
  • Page 23 – Colossal Boy and Shrinking Violet are dancing the night away, while far off, Duplicate Boy seethes.

The next issue features a spotlight, the first one since Wildfire’s, and this one is Cosmic Boy.   Usually the calmest, the “Rock/Rokk” of the Legion if you will, he has gone quite angry seeing his neighborhood bombed.   The Legion and Night Girl are forced to subdue him before he kills the firebombers.

We see how Rokk was actually born on Earth, not Braal, but his parents moved back to Braal once his dad’s job ended on Earth.   We see his younger brother Pol come along and at 14 Rokk left Braal to pursue his destiny as a man.   Along the way he founded and became the first leader of the Legion of Super-Heroes.

Night Girl tells of how she fell in love with him from afar and pursued Rokk to no end, including having her father give her superpowers all her own and joining the Legion of Substitute Heroes to be close to him.       Rokk grows tired of waiting and breaks into the hospital records.. he discovers that his father and brother are doing fairly well given the circumstances, but his mother has died.

Rokk asks Night Girl to forgive him, as he knocks her out with a sudden attack of metal hitting her head.   Cosmic Boy ifnores his flight ring and instead flies on the magnetic current of the Earth itself, moving faster than he has ever done before.   He finds the firebombers in the midst of transport and begins to turn the iron in their blood against them.   As the criminals scream in agony, Rokk’s mother appears as an image in her son’s consciousness and tells him “NO!”

Rokk stops his assault and leaves.   Sadder, but still with integrity.

Next Up:   A romantic triangle explodes, a dead Legionnaire comes back, and a Legionnaire destined to die.. just might.   More Legion in a few!

Legion Backup

1

Every now and then, a super-team needs some help.   Sometimes that help comes in the form of other heroes, but sometimes that help comes in the form of supporting characters.   In the case of the futuristic world of the Legion of Super-Heroes, they typically are one and the same.

The far flung world of Lallor is home to a group of five heroes known simplistically enough as The Heroes of Lallor.

From L to R:   Life Lass, Duplicate Boy, Beast Boy (bust statue), Gas Girl, and Evolvo Lad

Ilshu Nor was their leader and as Beast Boy possessed the ability to transform into any animal.

Sev Tcheru is Evolvo Lad and is able to evolve his humanoid form to an advanced race possessing super-intelligence or devolve into a super-strong neanderthal.

Tal Nahii is Gas Girl who is able to transmute her body into any element or compound that occurs naturally in gaseous form.

Somi Gan as Life Lass is able to imbue any inanimate object with a semblance of life and direct that object to do her bidding.

Ord Quelu as Duplicate Boy is able to duplicate the power of any super-hero, mostly relying on the powers of the stronger heroes like Superboy and Mon-El.

Beast Boy went insane soon after the Lallorians encountered the Legion and was killed as a result of his beastial side becoming too strong.   Evolvo Lad took over as their leader and they assist the Legion occasionally, most notably Duplicate Boy has a romantic relationship with Legionnaire Shrinking Violet.

From L to R:   Aviax, Elvo, Psyche, Immorto, Quantum Queen, and Dartalg

The Wanderers are a group of wandering heroes looking for their home.   After encountering the Legion and befriending them, the Wanderers became staunch allies of the Legion arriving to assist when times became too tough.

Quantum Queen was foretold to join the Legion and die in service in the Legion in the first Adult Legion story, but this has not yet occurred.   Celebrand was the team leader, however he died and the rest of the team was transformed into more extreme versions of their previous selves.

Dartalg uses a blowdart weapon while Elvo possesses a blade, both are masters with these weapons, after the transformation Dartalg found himself covered in spines that he could use as projectile weapons.   Immorto cannot be killed and became their new leader, while Ornitho had a pair of wings that enable him to fly, now he transforms into a bird like creature.   Psyche is a broadcast empath who can influence the emotions of others while Quantum Queen can project and transform herself into any form of energy

The Science Police Officers typically have no powers but are often close collaborators to the Legion of Super-Heroes as the beat cops of the 30th Century, however some officers would share the abilities of some Legionnaires if all members of that race possessed them like Phantom Girl’s phasing or Triplicate Girl’s duplication powers.   Its most notable members include Chief Zendak, Legion Liaison Officer Shvaughn Erin, Officer Gigi Cusimano, and Officer Dvron.   Officer Erin begins a romantic relationship with Element Lad, while Officer Cusimano had a romantic relationship with Colossal Boy when they were both at the Science Police Academy on Mars.

Dev-Em is the scoundrel of Krypton.   Another survivor of the explosion, Dev-Em came to Earth and sought to take over Clark’s place in Smallville.   After a few run-ins Dev-Em eventually saw the error of his ways and managed to get to the 30th Century, where he became an agent for Interstellar Counter-Intelligence Corps.   Brash and a bit rebellious, Dev-Em has never demonstrated his ability to work well with a team, resulting in the Legion not offering him a spot on the roster.

The Legion Academy is located on Montauk Point and is where the Legion trains heroes interesting in joining the Legion.   Here heroes learn about combat, piloting a starship, using Legion equipment, and go on small field missions to test their abilities.   Most of the tests are focused on the student’s ability to function as a team, which is the real strength of the Legion.   Bouncing Boy and Duo Damsel watch over their students and guide them in hopes that they will one day become Legionnaires.   Graduates of Legion Academy who went on to become Legionnaires include Chemical King, Timber Wolf, Dawnstar, and Blok.

Students at the Legion Academy include

  • Comet Queen – Grava of Extal who flies at super-speed and can project an choking gas.
  • Crystal Kid – Bobb Kohan who possesses the ability to produce crystalline structures.
  • Lamprey -Tayla Scott has the ability to survive underwater and project electrical attacks.
  • Laurel Kent – a 30th century descendant of Superman who possesses invulnerability.
  • Magnetic Kid – Pol Krinn, Cosmic Boy’s younger brother, who possesses magnetic control.
  • Nightwind – Berta Haris possesses the ability to control air.
  • Power Boy – Jed Rikane issuper strong and invulnerable.
  • Shadow Kid – Grev Mallor, Shadow Lass’ cousin who is training to protect Talok VIII or to take the place of his cousin.
  • Tellus – Ganglious of the watery world Hykraius who possesses telepathy and telekinesis powers.

The Legion of Super-Pets is one of those odd ideas of n animal auxillary that actually worked in a few issues of the Legion featuring the pets of the Legion, mostly those animals that had appeared in Superboy and Supergirl stories along with Chameleon Boy’s pet Proty.   Comet the Super-Horse,   Streaky the Super Cat, Krypto the Super Dog, Beppo the Super Monkey, and Proty.   Proty sacrificed his life to bring Lighting Lad back to life by taking Saturn Girl’s place during the Legion’s resurrection pact for Lightning Lad.

And we should acknowledge the contributions of five Honorary Legionnaires as well…

In Smallville, Clark’s two peers best friend Pete Ross and Lana Lang both became Honorary Legionnaires.

Pete Ross had discovered Clark’s secret and kept it secret, even from Clark that he knew.   Pete would frequently run “interference” for Clark, assisting him in maintaining his secret identity, mostly with regard to Lana Lang’s almost obsessive and correct theory that Clark and Superboy were one and the same.   Pete earned his Honorary membership by keeping Clark’s secret and he carries a coin that can summon the Legion of Super-Heroes.

For Lana, she saved an alien who had come to Smallville and as a reward the alien gave Lana a bio-ring that allowed her to assume a human-hybrid insect form.   Sewing a costume and calling herself Insect Queen, Lana assisted the Legion versus Mordru the Merciless, but was unable to join the Legion as the source of her powers is her ring, however she was awarded Honorary status with the Legion.

Rond Vidar is the son of Legion villain Universo and is immune to his father’s hypnotic powers enabling him to help the Legion many times in defeating him.   Rond also invented the Time Cube and helped modify the Time Bubble for the Legion’s time traveling adventures.

Kid Psycho is Gnill Opral and was born with an abnormally large head which foretold of his great psychic abilities.   Taking the heroic name Kid Psycho Gnill attempted to join the Legion.   However, despite passing all the tests he was rejected, but did not understand why.   When the Legionnaires revealed that their medical tests had revealed that every time Gnill uses his powers he shortens his life span, they explained that they could not have him as a full-time member knowing he would be killing himself every time he went on a mission.   Gnill understood, being the first time he had heard this news, and became an Honorary Legionnaire called in only extreme emergencies.

Cub Photographer Jimmy Olsen went through a lot of crazy and wacky Silver Age transformations, but perhaps one of the most famous is his transformation into Honorary Legionnaire Elastic Lad.   Drinking a formula that I theorize must be similar to the Elongated Man’s gingold extract Jimmy gains stretching powers for a time.

Next Up:   We spend time discussing one of the greatest groups of heroes ever.. The Green Lantern Corps!!!
