Mal saved the Titans from a street gang, when the Titans had foresworn their abilities and decided to live like normal teenagers do. Eventually Mal discovered a powerful exoskeleton suit and a shield and became The Guardian. Mal’s girlfriend Karen Beecher also decided to join the Titans and using her scientific know how decided to build a suit that made her The Bumblebee. Together the two became very valuable allies to the Titans.
Mal would find himself in conflict with a creature known as Azrael and is awarded a horn which gives Mal the ability to create interspatial warps. Mal would then go by the name, Hornblower.
Eventually, Mal and Karen marry and mostly retire from super-heroics with her going to work for S.T.A.R. LabsScientific and Technological Advanced Research Laboratories is a common sight in the DC Universe. Typically one of the most forefront places for scientific research, most major cities have a S.T.A.R. Horn – While acting as Hornblower, Mal can blow on the horn, mostly to create warps that will transport foes or allies to wherever he wishes. The horn can also blow a basic sonic attack as well.
