Justice Society of America

In the wake of the rise of gangsters and the lingering economic woes from the Great Depression saw the birth of many heroes on Earth-Two.   Together these heroes banded together to form the Justice Society of America, the pre-cursor to the Justice League of America, the JSA fought together for a few years until President Franklin Delano Roosevelt commanded the JSA be disbanded temporarily during war time and that all so called “Mystery Men” join the All-Star Squadron.

Once World War II had concluded, the All-Star Squadron was disbanded and the JSA continued its duties until they were called forth by the House Un-American Activities Committee in Congress.   The Senators presiding were convinced that they could no longer trust heroes who remained masked demanded the JSA remove their disguises and reveal their identities.   Instead the JSA refused, kept their identities secret, and vanished from the chamber.   At this point the great majority of the heroes went into retirement, with the exception of Superman and Wonder Woman, who had signed previous loyalty oaths with the government and Batman, who operated as an approved vigilante in Gotham City.

The JSA emerged from retirement when contacted by the Justice League of America on Earth-One and since that time the two groups have met annually throughout the years in adventures called “Crisis On…” stories.   Usually these stories involved an event that carries ramifications for both worlds.
