Justice League of America

The Justice League of America… The Protectors of Earth…The World’s Greatest Super-Heroes…

As the atomic age moved on and our older heroes molded alongside new heroes with old names, the flagship group is the Justice League of America.

The origin of the Justice League starts with an invasion from the planet Appelax, where seven conquerors were going to use Earth as their battlefield   in combat to the death to determine who will rule their homeworld.   Encased in asteroids, the aliens emerged fully formed and began to emit a radiation that turned anyone near them into genetic copies of the alien.

In Denver, a great Stone God arose, and was felled by the Martian Manhunter.

Under the sea, the Glass Golem met his defeat at the hands of Aquaman.

On Paradise Island, the Mercury Monster was beaten by Wonder Woman.

Across the blue skies of Africa, the Golden Roc was bested by Green Lantern.

In Italy, the Fire Lord had his flame snuffed out by the winds of The Flash.

Each of these five heroes had heard of another two meteors crash landing to Earth.   One in the Everglades Swamp and the other in Greenland.

The five heroes went and met in the Everglades, but there was no monster, just the asteroid.   To their horror, they began to turn into wood beings, and from the asteroid emerged the Wood King who led the five of the heroes to begin his conquering army.

Using teamwork, Aquaman exerted his will and bumped into Green Lantern, knocking the wood covering off his ring, as Green Lantern shined a beam it removed the wood covering from the Martian Manhunter’s head, which enabled him to blow the Flash into Wonder Woman, knocking her into the path of the Green Lantern beam which released her right side, her lasso side.

The Wood King found himself cut to splinters by the Lasso of Truth and the five heroes decided to take off after the last meteor.

Upon arriving, they saw Batman and Superman in battle with Crystal Creature, unfortunately the meteors were coated in Kryptonite, so as Superman lie down a victim of the Kryptonite, Batman in his Batplane, managed to lasso the meteor away, leaving Superman free to destroy the Crystaline Creature.   The remaining meteors were buried, save one that was kept as a trophy, and the seven heroes decided to form the Justice League of America.

Almost immediately, the group was tested again by Starro, the Star Conqueror and the group found their mascot member, Lucas “Snapper” Carr.

Soon the Justice League would be featured in their own title, instead of being a test feature in Brave and the Bold.

Shortly after the JLA was formed, Green Arrow, Atom, and Hawkman joined the team filling out the roster to a total of ten heroes.

And Metamorpho would say no to the offer of League Membership….

League members would leave as well like Martian Manhunter and Wonder Woman, who was eventually replaced by the Black Canary.

The Flash’s best friend, Elongated Man and the troubled android Red Tornado would join in back to back issues.

As the JLA became more male heavy, it was time to introduce more women to the mix and long time League allies, Hawkgirl and Zatanna were added to the roster.

Superman is forgetting Metamorpho on that top cover and just to rub it in, shortly after this event, another costumed hero would turn down the League.

Finally, the League would invite, new kid Firestorm to join the team, primarily to assist him in training for hero work with his new powers.

The Justice League has fought many villains in its day and its rogues gallery includes Starro, Felix Faust, T.O. Morrow, Professor Anthony Ivo, Queen Bee, the Royal Flush Gang, and of course, any villain of any member of the JLA frequently targets them, such as Lex Luthor, Cheetah, and the Joker.   In fact, the Injustice League and the Secret Society of Super-Villains was formed as a direct response to the Justice League’s existence.

 The Detroit Era
