Black Canary – Dinah Laurel Lance

Black Canary… The Blonde Bombshell… The Pretty Bird of Prey

Dinah Drake Lance started her career in the 1940s shortly after World War II and soon she was guest-starring as a major player in the DC Universe.   The daughter of a police officer, Dinah longed to fight the good fight and follow in her father’s footsteps, however the times were not welcoming of women in the police force and society and family demanded that Dinah go into a more typical line of work.   Dinah was blessed with a green thumb so she soon became one of the best florists in Gotham City.

At night however, the raven haired Dinah would don a blonde wig, a bathing suit, bolero jacket, her trademark fishnets, and ride her hand built motorcycle (built by her) in the pursuit of criminals.   Eventually Dinah caught the eye of Lawrence “Larry” Lance and the two started a romance that consummated in marriage.   When the Justice Society retired from public life, so did Dinah, until the new Justice League of America contacted the Justice Society of America and Dinah participated in a few cases.

One of those cases was pivotal in her development.   The JLA and JSA found themselves fighting a menace of cosmic proportions named Aquarius.   Larry threw himself in the way of a blast intended to kill Dinah.   Larry was instantly disintegrated.   Since it was too painful to stay behind in the familiar settings on Earth-Two, Dinah became the first permanent character to migrate from Earth-Two to Earth-One, where she discovered that the radiation from Aquarius had changed her to the point where when she got angry she emits a sonic scream.   Dubbed her “Canary Cry” Dinah joined the ranks of the Justice League, taking Wonder Woman’s spot for a time.

After a reasonable mourning period, Dinah soon became the Main Marian to Green Arrow’s Robin Hood and the two were practically inseparable for a while.   Dinah was instrumental in assisting Green Arrow’s ward Speedy in overcoming his heroin addiction.

Doctor Fate then transferred the original Black Canary’s memories to her daughter along with her skills and the younger Dinah went to Earth-One and joined the Justice League of America.  Now, realizing that most of her younger memories are just her mother’s Dinah had to rediscover her sense of self.
