Young Bruce Wayne is the son of Doctor Thomas Wayne and Martha Wayne.  The Waynes are old money and own a thriving industrial empire as well as a foundation to do charitable work in and around Gotham City.  While the Waynes thrived, Gotham City was not doing so well.  Corruption, poverty, and crime were rising all around town and while the Waynes did what they could, one family cannot stave off all the world’s ills.

One night, the Waynes treated their young son Bruce to a movie, Zorro.  Emboldened by Zorro’s ability to take down bad men in corrupt positions of power the young Bruce was filled with a sense of elation that would soon be all but forgotten.

As the three family members went through an alley, out from the shadows stepped a man named Joe Chill.  Joe attempted to rob the Waynes and grabbed for Martha’s pearls.  This caused Thomas to try to stop the gunman.  Joe shot Thomas Wayne, killing him.  This caused Martha to scream out, so Joe shot her as well.  As she fell backwards the strand of pearls broke and they littered the grimy and puddle filled alley.  Both his parents dead, Joe left behind young Bruce in the light of a single street lamp.

The police were called and it was a beat cop named James Gordon who assisted in collaring Joe Chill and bringing him to justice, yet this did not satisfy young Bruce.  He wanted justice.

The family had named their family butler, Alfred Pennyworth as Bruce’s caretaker in the interim until Bruce could reach adulthood and be responsible for himself.  Bruce excelled in his studies concentrating in criminology, sciences, athletics, and the law.  When Bruce returned to Gotham he discovered that there was more studying to be done.  He left and went around the world learning from the greatest martial artists and escape artists known to man.

Upon returning to Gotham, one final element was missing…a symbol.  Something to make criminals fear in the night.  Just then a bat crashed into the window of the study in Wayne Manor, adopting a symbol of a childhood fear would be the right way to go.  Bruce adopted the dark cloak of a bat and set about his work to make sure no other child suffer as he has suffered over the years.

Batman was born.
