Music
Need some geek music? Here are my suggestions.
Cruxshadows – If you crave dark melodies, then the Cruxshadows are for you. Haunting lyrics, gothic intentions, and a sexuality that cannot be denied, the Cruxhadows invite you into their world where there is no escape.
DJ Julian Marsh – A great gay music podcast here with some wonderful beats. If you are down, give this a listen, I guarantee that your mood will be lifted soon. Edging between old school anthems, fun new stuff, and even some gospel inspired songs, nothing gets my booty moving at the gym like DJ Julian Marsh.
DJ Nemesis – When I was at DragonCon last year, I had one of the best times ever dancing to DJ Nemesis’ mixes. Give them a listen, you will thank yourself!!! And you may just get lucky, I know I did.
DJ Spider – Brings some kicking beats in her mixes including some very fun geek call backs to old school cartoons, star wars, star trek, you name it, its in there. I have had the honor of meeting her and the woman is beyond statuesque. Give her beats a listen.
Emerald Rose – If your geek bent is more towards Tolkein, Ren Faires, and Celtic Fantasy pubs where bards sing and regale, then you want to check out Emerald Rose. Light, humorous, pagan, and wonderful.
Freezepop – Electronic synth poptacular joy. This group is excellent and fun to listen to. Give their ear candy a listen, you’ll go back for seconds.
Kirby Krackle – Named after Jack Kirby’s trademark art style, Kirby Krackle takes comic book concepts and makes some sweet music from those inspirations. My favorites include Going Home, about attending a comic convention, Ring Capacity, a song about Green Lantern, and Great Lakes Avengers, a song about finding oneself with super powers but rejected by all the good teams.
Le Sexoflex – Locals to Atlanta, Le Sexoflex is out front about slut power. Sex as power is always a good thing in my mind, and the folks in the band are easy on the eyes.
Ookla The Mok – Quirky, nostalgic, and garage bandy, this band brings humor and some surprising lyrics into their stuff. Their ode to super-powered monkeys is not to be missed.
Tripod – The Australian band appeared on television for a while but their hits “Hot Girl in a Comic Shop” and “Gonna Make Love To You Tonight” are great geek anthems.
DC Comics released a CD called The Music of DC Comics: 75th Anniversary Collection which features most of the music from movies, tv shows, and cartoons over the past 75 years. This is a MUST for any collector of geek music.
And even if you aren’t a geek specific band there are still the odd singles out there that are good for feeling heroic.
